Read the old system and write it down: what it does, where the data lives, and which parts nobody is sure about.
Wrap the old parts in an explicit layer, then replace what sits behind that layer piece by piece — the system keeps running throughout.

Never rewrite everything in one go.
Every replaced part has to be comparable with the old one.
Parts nobody understands get written down first, not guessed at.
What this needs from both sides
- Documentation of the old system, including the uncertain parts.
- The wrapping layer and the contract between old and new.
- The order in which parts are replaced.
- How old and new results are compared.
